History & History Related Items

Torrance history:

Torrance was founded in 1911 by Jared S. Torrance, (1852-1921), a real estate developer. He wanted to build a planned residential and industrial community. By 1921, petroleum was discovered here which greatly increased interest in the community. By the early 1950s there were over 600 oil wells here, but later on in the decade, production decreased down to only five barrels a day. By 1961, the city required the removal of all wooden oil rigs. By 1963, all remaining derricks had been removed. Many large corporations have their headquarters here, as well as electronics, plastics, aluminum and other large businesses.

The original Torrance city charter was voted on and ratified by a vote of the people on August 20, 1946, and filed with the California Secretary of State on January 7, 1947
